opossum vs possum

These three subspecies differ in appearance, diet and intelligence. It is said that the Australian possum is the most intelligent of all. It can learn how to open the ground by crawling and how to go around obstacles such as logs and rocks. It also has the ability to grasp and hunt small animals such as mice, insects and birds, which makes it different from other possum species.

The other dominant species in Australia is the Red back opossum. This specie does not have wrinkled skin and has red fur. It eats fruits and seeds unlike the other two possum species. When it is mating, it will choose the female and lay a single egg which then hatches after four weeks. After it hatches, the female goes into a burrow that leads to the den where the baby opossum will be kept. Other species will look at the eggs and take care of them until they reach maturity.

Opossum Vs Possum

Opossum usually lives in thick forests, where there are plenty of hiding places such as hollow trees, under leaves or branches. They can hide and surprise their prey with its excellent sense of smell. Aside from the good sense of smell, opossum also has a good sense of sight. They can see in the dark by using their eyesight which enables them to hunt by night. Their short ears help them detect sounds made by approaching predators such as cars and loud noises. Opossum is also very energetic, which is evident when they run very fast and bounce on their hind legs.

The diet of an opossum is usually related to its habitat. Most opossum eat berries, roots, leaves, flowers and sometimes bugs. When there are berries, caterpillars can also be a great source of nutrition as they are the ones who eat the leaves. On the other hand, it would be good to know that possum are omnivores; they can eat almost anything including meat and vegetables.

The physical strength and stamina of a possum are very strong and can kill a human being with one swipe of its tail. It has excellent hearing but unfortunately is deaf and blind. Its forelegs are very flexible so it can grasp and shake prey that is moving and heavy. However, if you get bitten by a possum, do not try to scratch because you might cause serious injuries to its body. Keep in mind that should you accidentally bite its tail, do not rub your face on its body and keep your hands away from its eyes.

If ever a Possum decides to take you for a ride, don't panic because they usually return home after eating their food. There have been reports of them coming back to their cage and then snuggling up against you. However, if you have observed aggressive behavior towards you, do not approach it. Instead, just stand beside it until it passes out of hunger. Although it is natural for them to come back to their cages for more food, you must remember that if you do so, you are encouraging it to bite and injure itself.

If ever you encounter a Possum in the wild, do not feed it any food except for what you have brought for it. It will eat anything within reach such as dead animal, insects, tree branches, etc. It does not need human food because it only eats foliage, buds, berries, fruits, etc. In order for it to grow and reproduce, it needs the help of a females mate.
